Sunlight makes a huge difference in choosing your plants like we all know. But so does the difference in dark/full shade or light shade. Or the difference in morning sun, or the late (harsh) afternoon sun. Make sure you know your light conditions, it makes the world of difference and will save you a ton of money & labour.

Rhododendrons tend to flower less and get leggy in too much shade, it prefers 4-6 hours of sunlight/ filtered sun. 1. “Nova Zembla” is known for its shade tolerance and makes a great dark shade option.
2. Canadian Hemlock is highly adaptable and does well in full shade. Weeping Canadian Hemlock and “Gentsch White“ are excellent varieties!
3. Japanese Plum Yews (Chephalotaxus) are highly adaptable and do well!
4. Japanese Holly does well in dark shade, “Mariesii” is an excellent choice.
5. Boxwood varieties are highly adaptable and do well.
6. Illicium “Ruby Red” handles dark shade well.
7. Fatsia and
8. Aucuba varieties do well.
9. Mahonia (might get a little leggy).
10. Skimmia and 11. Sarococca 12. Japanese Sedge (Carex)
Lots of flowering perennials do well:
Astilbe, Bleeding Heart, Hellebores, Toad Lily, Lungwort, Ferns, Hosta, Bugbane (Actea), Japanese forest grass (Hakonechloa), Brunnera, and the list goes on!
