Hedging questions: Why Leylandi Cypress and not Cedar? Doesn't all Leylandi get huge?

Western Red Cedar: is dying/struggling primarily due to climate change specifically from more frequent and severe summer droughts. Hotter, drier summers make it difficult for these trees to get enough water, causing stress and damage to their shallow roots,

Emerald Cedars:  Emerald Cedars are susceptible to water stress, which can be caused by prolonged dry summers or waterlogged soil from wet winters. Strong winds, particularly in combination with dry soil can be very damaging. Not deer resistant.

Leylandi Cypress:  Highly deer resistant and drought resistant once established.  Keep a rich green colour in winter. Fast growing which can lead to more maintenance yearly.

Leylandi Cypress “Shorthy”: a dwarf version with its striking rich green foliage.  Suitable for small spaces. Fast growing up to 5’ tall x 2’wide, and then a slow-moderate rate will mature to 12’ tall x 4’ wide.

Leylandi Cypress

Fast growing, pretty and lush, deer resistant & drought tolerant!  Extremely hardy and easy to grow.  Requires yearly maintenance to keep Leylandi at a specific height and width.  If left to be, Leylandi can grow up to 40-50 feet tall. Growth rate: 3 feet per year.  For a quick, filling in hedge, plant 3 feet apart.  Makes for a BRILLIANT SOUND BARRIER!  Do not tolerate standing water.

California Lilac Victoria

A dense, fast growing shrub with glossy green leaves and powder blue flowers!  Perfect for screening and can be easily pruned into a hedge (prune after flowering).  A good choice for attracting bees and butterflies to your yard. Deer resistant once established.  Grows up to 9 feet tall and if left without pruning, 12 feet wide. Does best in well drained soil, full sun to part shade (too much shade will lead to disappointing flower production).

Escallonia Pink Princess

Nearly year-around flowers! Finely textured, glossy, deep green leaves.  Thrives in coastal conditions! A great choice for screening or hedge plant - responds well to shearing. Full sun to part shade lover, fast growing, grows to 6 feet tall. Usually ignored by deer especially once established.

Pieris Japonica (afternoon shade for best results)

Great as a part shade, (afternoon shade) informal, deer resistant hedge. Takes well to pruning.  Year around interest!

”Mountain Fire”:  Grows to 11 feet tall, 7 feet wide if left unpruned

”Forest Flame”:  Grows to 8 feet tall and 6 feet wide.
“Katsura”:  compact, pink flowers and wine-red new growth that matures to green! 4-5’ tall and wide.

Strawberry tree/Arbutus Unendo

Commonly known as Strawberry Tree, Arbutus unendo compacta is best known as an ornamental, evergreen shrub or small tree.  However it can also be used to great effect as a formal or informal hedge!  From fall to mid-winter, a profusion of drooping white clusters of fragrant, bell-shaped flowers (enjoyed by hummingbirds) gets pollinated by bees and one inch fruit appear in winter. Fruit ripen to red over 12 months.  Bark peels and flakes! Grows 6-10 feet tall, needs good drainage.  Full sun to part shade.  Medium growing rate.
